Tre anni sono passati dalla scomparsa di Giulio Regeni, il giovane ricercatore italiano ritrovato ucciso in Egitto con i segni evidenti della tortura. In questi tre anni non siamo riusciti ad avere giustizia. Tutti gli indizi portano al vertice delle forze di polizia egiziane, ma l’inchiesta è stata sabotata in ogni modo dal regime di Al Sisi. Improbabile che un dittatore intoni il mea culpa o assicuri alla giustizia i suoi sicari. Al massimo può consegnare qualche soldato semplice o criminali comuni, come hanno cercato di fare all’inizio per depistare le indagini. 

A tutto questo noi italiani come abbiamo reagito? La società civile si è stretta intorno alla famiglia e continua a mobilitarsi con una marea di iniziative. Il ceto politico ha ciclicamente dichiarato di pretendere la verità e sostenere la magistratura, fino a ventilare l’ipotesi di interrompere i rapporti con l’Egitto, ma ai proclami non sono seguiti i fatti. Le relazioni diplomatiche e gli scambi commerciali tra Italia ed Egitto vanno avanti come prima. 

Gli egiziani sostanzialmente ci hanno preso in giro, in attesa che il caso si sgonfiasse, in nome della realpolitik. In questi tre anni quel regime dittatoriale ha praticato ogni genere di crimini e abusi contro dissidenti e minoranze: sequestri, incarcerazione, tortura, assassinii. Ma l’Italia e l’Europa preferiscono non vedere. Fanno finta di nulla o si limitano a qualche dichiarazione di circostanza, perché gas, petrolio e altri business sono più importanti dei diritti umani. L’amara verità è questa e il caso Regeni ce la conferma. Continuiamo a esigere verità e giustizia, chiediamo al governo di fare pressione, ma senza farci troppe illusioni.

and the realism of the business

Three years have passed since the death of Giulio Regeni, the young Italian researcher found dead in Egypt with the obvious signs of torture. In these three years, we have not succeeded in having justice. All clues lead to the summit of the Egyptian police forces, but the investigation was sabotaged in every way by the Al Sisi regime. Unlikely that a dictator intones the mea culpa or assure his assassins to justice. At most he can deliver some simple soldier or common criminals, as they tried to do at the beginning to sidetrack the investigation.
To all this we Italians how did we react? Civil society has gathered around the family and continues to mobilize with a flood of initiatives. The political class has cyclically declared to demand the truth and support the judiciary, up to airing the hypothesis of interrupting relations with Egypt, but the proclamations did not follow the facts. Diplomatic relations and trade between Italy and Egypt go on as before.
The Egyptians basically made fun of us, waiting for the case to collapse, in the name of realpolitik. In these three years, that dictatorial regime has practiced all kinds of crimes and abuses against dissidents and minorities: kidnapping, incarceration, torture, assassinations. But Italy and Europe prefer not to see. They pretend nothing or are limited to some statement of circumstance because gas, oil and other businesses are more important than human rights. The bitter truth is this and the case Regeni confirms it. We continue to demand truth and justice, we ask the government to press, but without making too many illusions.
