Le elezioni di metà mandato, previste per il prossimo martedì 6 novembre, sono da sempre un test per verificare il consenso della presidenza degli Stati Uniti. Quest’anno hanno un valore speciale, che attendo con molta curiosità. Ci diranno se l’America ha maturato gli anticorpi per liberarsi democraticamente della grave anomalia chiamata Donald Trump.
Sono in gioco i 435 seggi della Camera e 33 seggi al Senato, in 36 Stati si voterà inoltre per eleggere i governatori. Se prevarranno nettamente i candidati democratici, con il conseguente cambiamento degli equilibri di maggioranza nel parlamento e nel paese, è probabile che si avvicini la fine politica del peggior presidente della storia americana recente, un personaggio pericoloso, totalmente inadatto a governare uno Stato. Un mix di immoralità, incompetenza e instabilità psicologica.
In vista delle elezioni di midterm il regista Michael Moore – che previde la vittoria di Trump e si è detto sicuro che non terminerà il mandato – ha realizzato un film documentario – Fahrenheit 11/9 – in cui analizza l’anomalia Trump e incoraggia i cittadini americani a prendere coraggio per ridare forza al meglio della società americana.
Il film è stato recentemente presentato alla Festa del Cinema di Roma e nei prossimi giorni sarà visibile nelle sale italiane. In questa occasione Michael Moore ha ribadito un concetto chiave: la democrazia non è una conquista perenne, è sempre a rischio di degenerare in nuove forme autoritarie, se la società civile si addormenta, i poteri di controllo smettono di vigilare e le forze politiche progressiste si accomodano nelle stanze del privilegio lasciando ai demagoghi la possibilità di far leva sulle paure dei ceti deboli. Per salvare il salvabile dunque “è necessario riappropriarsi di una identità politica radicalmente democratica”. Temi che stimolano alla riflessione, guardando anche a quel che accade nella nostra vecchia Europa.
In attesa delle elezioni, non mi perderò il film di Michael Moore!

The mid-term elections, scheduled for next Tuesday, November 6, have always been a test to verify the consent of the US Presidency. This year they have a special value, which I look forward to with great curiosity. They will tell us if America has developed antibodies to democratically free themselves from the serious anomaly called Donald Trump.
The 435 seats in the Chamber and 33 seats in the Senate are at stake, and in 36 States, they will vote to elect governors. If Democratic candidates, like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, clearly prevail, with the consequent change in the balance of majority in Congress and in the country, it is likely that the political end of the worst president of recent American history, a dangerous character, totally unfit to govern a nation, is approaching. This president expresses a mix of immorality, incompetence, and psychological instability.
A good illustration of the importance of the midterm elections is a documentary film, Fahrenheit 11/9, made by director Michael Moore, who foresaw the victory of Trump and said he would not finish his mandate. In the film, he analyzes the anomaly Trump and encourages US citizens to take courage to restore strength to the best of American society.
The film was recently presented at the Rome Film Festival and in the coming days will be shown in Italian cinemas. On this occasion, Michael Moore reiterated a key concept: democracy is not a permanent condition, it is always at risk of degenerating into new authoritarian forms. If civil society falls asleep, the powers of control settle too comfortably in the rooms of the privileged, leaving the demagogues to leverage the fears of the weaker classes. To save what can be saved, therefore, “it is necessary to regain a radically democratic political identity”. We must study the topics that stimulate reflection, and especially look at what happened in our old Europe, for example, the rise of fascism. As a progressive political movement, we cannot cease to be vigilant!
As we anticipate the coming election, I urge you not to miss the Michael Moore film!
